On Islamic Philosophy, Mind (‘Aql), and the Question of Originality

For too long, Islamic philosophy has been trapped between two caricatures: dismissed as a mere footnote to Greek thought in Arabic dress, or narrowly defined as a simple continuation of it.

It reads Islamic philosophy as a living tradition of intellectual engagement: a tradition in which inherited ideas were not merely preserved, but appropriated, transformed, contested, synthesized, and developed in radically new directions.
